- Night-Time Incident -

Comments:

"Exhausted, the few survivors pulled their bodies from the sea. Some collapsed gratefully on the shore, while others staggered to their feet, turning to watch in stunned disbelief as the huge ship shuddered and moaned, straining metal bellowing out its death cry. The communications array was aflame, while the dull blue glow from a cracked reactor emanated from one of the engine tubes.

It had all happened so quickly, none of the survivors could say for sure what had hit them, swatting this kilometers-long vessel from the sky like the merest insect. More to the point, no one was sure whether the bridge crew had had any chance to get a distress signal away, or even what planet they were now crawling upon.

They scanned the water between them and the sinking hulk for any sign of bobbing helmets or environment suits, but it appeared most of their companions hadn't survived the impact. Reeling from shock, they watched dully as the ship groaned once more, then sank quickly beneath the murky waves.

They were well and truly alone."

Okay, I will readily admit that this image was inspired by the climax of James Cameron's Titanic, with an SF twist. This recollection is bolstered by the fact that I rendered this a few weeks after seeing the blockbuster in early 1998.
